The New English Experience for Us (NEXUS) Second Edition
presents a straightforward learning package aimed at developing
the learners’ foundational skills through an array of decodable and
authentic texts for a better appreciation and understanding of the
text read. Selections show respect for multicultural traditions, Filipino
values, and good citizenship.

The series follows Cummins’ two types of language proficiency:
Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS), where oral and visual
cues and other context-embedded tasks in listening and speaking
skills are seen in the initial lessons, and the gradual shift to reading and
literacy activities to build the student’s Cognitive Academic Language
Proficiency (CALP) in the succeeding learning materials. Activities
are arranged from the simplest to the more challenging ones to help
students engage in cognitively demanding tasks.
