“The fifth edition of Science for Active Learning (SAL) series is anchored on the DepEd’s MATATAG K to 10 curriculum of the K-12 program for Science. It aims to develop scientifically, environmentally, and technology and engineering literacy that will lead pupils to become critical and creative problem solvers, innovative thinkers, informed decision-makers, effective communicators, and responsible stewards of nature. This series provides meaningful, challenging, and fun-filled leaving experiences to develop, reinforce, and enhance learning competencies through varied hands-on, minds-on, and hearts-on activities (in school and home), inquiry-based activities, technology-assisted activities, extensive use of graphic organizers, and design-thinking activities.”
Chapter Concept Map introduces and relates the main topics to be discussed. It is the overview of the lessons of each chapter Do and Discover and KWL chart enable them to discover new concepts about the discussion and reflect these ideas with what they have learned. Self-Check provides exercises in between lessons to further develop the pupils’ understanding and act as an assessment for learning. Learning from a Distance provides pupils with online or offline learning activities they can do at home. Science Process Skills to apply their knowledge of the process skills as they go through the lessons. Online Learning Guide supplies other sources of information. Chapter Recap outlines the important topics to help pupils recall the components. Challenge is the summative assessment of the book and tests the understanding of the pupils. This includes Knowledge, Process/Skills, Understanding, Product, and Self-Assessment questions. Understand, Design, and Create is a hands-on activity that develops the pupils’ inventive and creative skills by letting them plan a project or design a model. Making Connections relates important science concepts with the environment, technology, culture, and entrepreneurship, among others. It shows how science can be applied to daily life.
